The Real Madrid

“De Madrid al cielo!”

The Spanish capital, whilst it is often overshadowed by its cousin Barcelona, is not a place you should miss. An energetic city with something for everyone – rooftop bars, exquisite monuments, ornate architecture and yummy tapas! As the saying goes – from Madrid to heaven – there is nowhere quite like Madrid!

For a brief introduction, a little history, sights and city orientation, we highly recommend a free walking tour.  See the one we did here.

The famous Plaza Mayor is located in the heart of the historic district, where you’ll find tourists sipping on café con leche and Madrid’s famous speciality, bocadillo de Calamares (a deep fried oasis of calamari and carbs)!

The social hub that is Puerta de Sol, buzzes with tourists and locals meeting friends and people watching. It is a main transport hub, with a plethora of street performers and where most pub crawls start. Ensure that you get a selfie with Madrid’s famous bear and strawberry statue – the city’s coat of arms. Venturing past Puerta de Sol, you’ll arrive on Gran Via or ‘Great Way’, the mini broad way lined with high-street and designer stores, that is true to its namesake.

Retiro Park is the perfect place to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. Row a boat, look at the sculptures, visit the Egyptian Temple (a stunning spot for a sunset picnic) or even simply find some shade – you’ll easily be able to spend half a day here! Another highlight is the Crystal Palace, perfect for insta pics and to cultivate your art taste.

Palacio Real, is the official residence of the Spanish Royal Family and the ultimate Barbie Dream House. With over 2800 rooms, it’s Europe’s largest palace. Lust over the beautiful views, ornate architecture and luxe interiors, and it’ll have you wondering when can you move in (Hey MTV, welcome to my crib)! Next door, you can visit Catedral de la Almudena, the modestly beautiful cathedral which was recently finished in the 1990s.

If you’re still searching for an excuse to visit Madrid, one word – churros, and lots of them! Renowned within this region, these delicious crispy doughnut like pastries can be dipped in chocolate and are best enjoyed all day, erryday. Seriously, San Gines is open 24hrs, late night snack or after party binge fest anyone?! Can it get any better?!

Until next time Madrid, Adios!!!!
